Program Overview

KnowR!sk 2025 is designed to help Underground Infrastructure Owners (UIOs), Excavators, and Locate Service Providers recognize and understand risky behaviours that could harm workers, communities, the industry, and infrastructure.

This is a micro-learning program, available only online.

Upon successful completion of all micro-learning, students will be able to:

  • Recognize various risky behaviours.
  • Elaborate on how their behaviours can impact other stakeholders and communities.
  • Generalize the consequences of risky behaviours.
  • Devise solutions to decrease the risks.


Available Micro-learning:

  • The Safe Excavation Practices micro-learning consists of the following lessons:
    • Understanding Excavation Responsibilities
    • Role of Ontario One Call
    • Assessment

  • The Incident Analysis and Legal Framework micro-learning consists of the following lessons:
    • Analyzing Excavation Incidents
    • Applying the Act to your work
    • Assessment

  • The Communication and Stakeholder Impact micro-learning consists of the following lessons:
    • Stakeholder Impact of Untimely Locate Requests
    • Resolving Ambiguous Instructions
    • Assessment

After completing these micro-learning courses, learners are encouraged to complete the Mid-certificate Assessment and Survey.

  • The Technical Skills for Map Validation micro-learning consists of the following lessons:
    • Risks of Incorrect Maps
    • Validating Maps
    • Assessment

  • The Documentation and Compliance micro-learning consists of the following lessons:
    • Key Elements of a Notification Instruction Form
    • Risks of Outdated Information
    • Assessment

  • The Locate Responses and Locate Documentation micro-learning consists of the following lessons:
    • Risks of Improper Locate Responses
    • Evaluating Locate Documentation
    • Assessment

  • The 360 Feedback Practices micro-learning consists of the following lessons:
    • Keeping 360 Feedback Up to Date
    • Editing 360 Feedback Entries
    • Assessment

After completing these micro-learning courses, learners are encouraged to complete the Final Assessment and Survey.


Online Duration

The estimated learning time for each lesson is 15 minutes, and each micro-learning course is around 45 minutes.

Learners have 60 days to complete each micro-learning course once started.

During the 60 days, learners can go through every module at their own pace.

If the learner hasn’t completed the micro-learning within 60 days, the learner will need to complete all the lessons again.


Pass Mark

A mark of 80% on the final exam is required to obtain the certificate of completion.

Learners may take the exam up to 3 times to achieve a passing mark.


Certification of Completion

Upon successful completion of each micro-learning module, learners will receive a Certificate of Completion, available for download and printing, along with a digital badge that can be shared on professional platforms.

Those who complete all micro-learning modules and required assessments will earn an additional Program Certificate of Completion and corresponding digital badge.

All certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of completion listed on the certificate.

What topics does the course cover?

KnowR!sk includes seven interactive micro-learning modules. Each module includes two short lessons and a final assessment.

The program is designed for both underground infrastructure owners and contractors, with practical content focused on infrastructure safety, compliance, and damage prevention.

Topics include:

  • Excavation responsibilities and the role of Ontario One Call
  • Reviewing past incidents and applying legislation to daily work
  • The impact of untimely or unclear locate requests
  • Map validation and risks related to inaccurate or outdated information
  • Completing Notification Instruction Forms
  • Understanding locate responses and reviewing locate documentation
  • Keeping 360 Feedback accurate and current

Each topic includes scenario-based activities, knowledge checks, and quizzes to support learning and retention.
